What Luggage is Restricted in Airports

With the rise of global terrorist threats many countries around the world have become more restrictive in what they allow to be carried on an aircraft. Knowing what items are allowed and what items are not allowed in your luggage can help you get though airport security faster. It can also help you avoid trouble, and in some cases keep you out of jail.
Some baggage restrictions will vary by country and are updated frequently, so it’s always best to check with the authorities in any country you will be traveling though. There are some common guidelines that apply, almost, universally around the world. Many of the restrictions are common sense, while others may be surprising.
It should be obvious to most people that you should not try to bring weapons on an aircraft. But do you know what constitutes a weapon? The NTSB in the United States does not allow anyone to take any sharp object onto and aircraft. The only exceptions to this rule are they allow you to take disposable razors and disposable razor cartridges, as well as scissors with blades less than four inches long. Some not so obvious weapons include pool cues, ski poles, and hockey sticks.
Most all flammable items are prohibited in both carryon and checked baggage. The only exceptions to this rule are common lighters and one book of safety matched are permitted in carryon luggage, and lighters without fuel are also allowed in carryon baggage. Almost all liquids are prohibited in carryon luggage. The only exception is that you are allowed to carry non-flammable liquid or gel in 3.4 ounce (100 ml) or smaller containers.
Since regulations vary by jurisdiction and change often, the smart traveler will always check with the appropriate authority before trying to take a questionable item onto an airplane.
